The Early Pregnancy Loss Coalition has welcomed landmark AIHW data providing the first official national picture of miscarriage in Australia. The findings show three in 10 women who gave birth had previously experienced at least one miscarriage, reinforcing calls for greater investment in miscarriage care, research and support.

The Early Pregnancy Loss Coalition (EPLC) has issued an open letter urging Senator Malcolm Roberts to retract comments linking COVID-19 vaccination to miscarriage, saying unsupported claims can deepen the distress experienced by bereaved families. The EPLC is calling for respectful, evidence-based public discussion of miscarriage and renewed focus on improving care, research and support for the thousands of Australians affected by pregnancy loss each year.

EPLC welcomes AIHW’s framework for miscarriage data collection, a core component of the $9.5 million package requested by the EPLC and funded in the government’s 2024/25 Federal Budget. The public consultation is now open.
